Sweet Lake Biscuits

By now, we are sure you all know that we love breakfast/brunch dates.  A good place for a little breakfast date is Sweet Lake Biscuits and Limeade. This is probably the only place we don't get coffee, bloody marys, or mimosas with breakfast/brunch.  They are known for their limeade so you have to try it.  Som likes the mint limeade and Sothea actually likes the lemonade, the ginger one to be specific.  The drinks are handmade so they do take a little while to make especially on a busy weekend so order them right away!

For food, we like the Hoss but everyone likes the Hoss.  It seems like at least one person from every table orders one.  It is a biscuit, fried chicken, egg, bacon, cheddar with sausage gravy.

Equally as good is the T-Rose.  This one comes with a portabella mushroom, asparagus, Swiss cheese and mushroom gravy.

Also a really good side is their red quinoa potato has browns.

We will get a Hoss and a T-Rose and each take a half of each!

Sicilia Mia

We are always recommending places to people or our friends always let us pick where to go for dinner but once in awhile someone recommends something to us.   Two different people actually thought that we would like Sicilia Mia.  So we had to try it.  We started off with the Carpaccio. It came out and we were surprised by how large it was.  But it was so good that we ate the whole thing.

Then we tried the Spaghetti alla Carbonara which was recommended by both people that told us about this place.   This one is prepared and served table side which was really neat.

We absolutely loved this carbonara.  It was delicious. It's one of those dishes that we'll probably order every time we go to Sicila Mia.

We also ordered the Bistecca alla Griglia which is grilled rib eye topped with arugula, shaved Parmesan and a balsamic drizzle.  The rib-eye was cooked very nicely and the dish was delicious.

All the portions were a really good sized and we were so full that we couldn't even finish the meal. We took leftovers home and didn't even get to try to dessert which all looked so delicious.  Definitely next time, we will have to try dessert.

Brunch at Taqueria 27

We've been going to Taqueria 27 for awhile now, we even celebrated our good friend, Lourie's 30th birthday there but for some reason, we have never gone their for brunch.  Maybe it's because we have our favorite brunch places that we usually always go to.

It was a nice warm spring day when we went, so Sothea wanted to enjoy a refreshing mimosa.  Som opted for a Bloody Mary which he really enjoyed. It's up there on his top list of Bloody Marys in Salt Lake City.

Som ordered the Fried Chicken and "Donuts".  It is yummy breaded chicken on top of churros.  Yes, churros!  It came with a side of jalapeno jelly and agave-maple syrup.  It still isn't Som's favorite chicken and waffles variation in the city but he did enjoy the dish.

Sothea ordered tacos because what is a trip to Taqueria 27 without tacos.  She ordered the Turkey Chorizo and Egg Tacos which was her favorite one.  Sothea also ordered the Oaxacan Steak and Eggs which was Som's favorite out of the two. Sothea couldn't finish all four so of course Som had to have one.

It was definitely not our typical brunch but it was a nice change.

Fireside on Regent

When the new Eccles Theater on Main Street open, we were super excited.  The place is gorgeous. When we heard they were transforming Regent Street behind the Eccles Theater, we were more excited.  Right now there isn't much.  We have been patiently waiting for Viet Pham's new restaurant Pretty Bird to open up.  In the meantime, we went to Fireside.  Fireside is a fine dining restaurant that focuses on wood fire pizza and artisan pastas.  Of course, we had to try one of each but first we ordered cocktails.

We went during Negroni week so Som ordered their Mezcal Negroni.  It had Ransom sweet vermouth, Wahaka mezcal, Campari, and Aperol.  It was very good.  We actually went out to the liquor store after to get Aperol to try it at home.  Sothea ordered the Fireside Margarita which also had mezcal.  We had been on this mezcal kick lately.  The margarita also had Tito's, Aperol, lemongrass simple syrup and a house made sour. It's probably one of the better margaritas, Sothea has had.  We definitely want to go back and try more of their cocktails.

The first item that came out was the Patsy Marley pizza.  We both looked at the menu and said that one sounds really good.  It had little neck clams, roasted sweet pepper, chorizo, mozzarella, tomatoes, and saffron aioli.  Sounds delicious right?  It was, the flavors were all there but the pizza was rather soggy which was disappointing and one slice only had one clam.  For the price, we wouldn't order this one again.

For our pasta, we ordered the mushroom bucatini.  The pasta was perfect and the mushrooms were delicious.  Out of the two this was our favorite dish.

For dessert, the Ginger Baby Cake peeked our interest.  It came with an espresso ice cream and brittle.  It was good but super rich. After a few bites, you don't really want anymore.

Overall we thought the food was a little pricey but we loved their cocktails.  We'll definitely go back and try a couple of other things.

Gospel Brunch

We won a pair of tickets to Gospel Brunch at the Gateway. This is a fairly new event and we were super excited to go. Tickets are normally $25 which includes 2 drinks.  Additional drink tickets can be purchased for $3 a piece.

The live gospel performance is by the Unity Gospel Choir. They were pretty amazing.  The acoustics weren't that great in there but they still did a really good job.

The brunch includes bites from Cubby's and other various brunch items.  The selection was not very big but everything from Cubby's was really good.  The breakfast burritos were the best item.  There was also coffee from 3 cups but we did not try that.

Cubby's Sandwiches

We did however make our way to the Bloody Mary bar. You can choose from the Classic Mild mix or the Chillies and Peppers Spicy Mix and there are various toppings that can be added to your Bloody Mary.  Som went for the spicy mix and one was enough for him.  His tolerance for spice has gone down with age...

They also had flavored mimosas.  Grapefruit is the best one.

Bloody Mary Bar

It was a good time.  The music was great.  It was a nice relaxing Sunday and we'd go again.

Oh and it's definitely Small Lake City.  We know Chris the bartender and he took great care of us!

On June 11th, the proceeds from Gospel Brunch will go the the Utah Pride Center.  If you would like to attend, you can use Promo Code SOUL4PRIDE to get $10 tickets.
Visit Event Brite for tickets.

We Olive

We went shopping at Trolley Square and stopped at We Olive to check it out. Towards the back of the store, there is a wine bar where you can order drinks and food.  We sat down and ordered a few drinks and some things to snack on.  Som ordered a glass of Rose, Wine by Joe which was nice and refreshing.  Sothea ordered their We Olive Peach Basil Mimosa. This is their signature mimosa sweetened by their Peach White Balsamic Vinegar with aromatics from their Fresh Basil Extra Virgin Olive Oil.  It is quite an interesting drink.  It taste really good.  The flavors of the peach and the basil are all there.  What makes it interesting is the bit of oil feel that you get from it.  Balsamic vinegar and olive oil are supposed to be chuck full of health benefits and what better way to get them then having a mimosa?!?!  It's a definitely must try.

We were brought out this plate of their olive oils to try.  The basil and pineapple one was our favorite. We ended up buying a bottle of it.  We loved that they brought this out because we probably wouldn't have tried them on our own.

We ordered the prosciutto wrapped dates.  It has goat cheese, walnuts, blood orange balsamic, and meyer lemon olive oil.  Best prosciutto wrapped dates ever!  Hands down.  Next time, we make them at home we've got to include walnuts and their balsamic and olive oil.

We also ordered the Dip Duo.  We chose the Albacore Dip with comes with fresh basil, cream cheese, smoked olive oil, and meyer lemon olive oil.  We aren't going to lie, we kind of fought over this one. It was devoured in no time.  We also chose the hummus which has black olive tapenade, garlic olive oil and dukkah.  This was also good. But we tried that Albacore one first and already fell in love.

This was our first time there and it won't be our last time.  We definitely want to go back and try more of their food.  FYI they have happy hour food specials Monday - Friday 3:30 - 6:30.

Lunch Date - Slapfish

There has been so much buzz about Slapfish opening in Lehi.  But what new thing that opens in Utah County doesn't get a lot of buzz?  On our way to Provo, one day, we decided to stop at Slapfish and check out what all the buzz was about.

We of course had to order their signature lobster roll which was a huge disappointment.  Maybe it's because we love Freshies lobster roll so much.   Slapfish's lobster roll is for people who don't like lobster rolls.  Whatever they put on it overwhelmed the lobster so much that it could have been anything else and you wouldn't know.

However, the Clobster Grilled Cheese is to die for.  It comes with half crab, half lobster, and Jersey Sauce.  We have no idea what Jersey Sauce is but it's good.  We would go back and order this again and again and again.

The fries are good too.  They were seasoned well.  We would definitely go back but we would definitely not order another lobster roll.  Freshies please open a brick and mortar in Salt Lake, please.
